More Code & Matter: ArTechLab
The intersection between code and material is shaping up to be a hot topic in this new year, and we’re not just saying that because of our own Transmaterials (though, you know, it is totally an indicator). On one hand Snowden’s whistleblowing has made us all painfully aware of the inherent physical dimension of data (screens, cables, drives and underwater cables from which three-letter secret services are happily tapping your digits), on the other hand a full-featured $100 3D-printer absolutely crushed its Kickstarter goal a few months back and should be shipping this year, bringing live transformations of digital files to three-dimensional objects to your living room.
Of course, those are just two intersections of matter and data. There’s much more already happening and a whole load more being researched and thought out. Which brings us to ArTechLab, a multidisciplinary research lab based at the ArteZ Academy for Art & Design in Enschede. Linking universities, institutions and companies, they research and facilitate the use of 3D printing, laser cutting and more.
On Thursday 23 January at TETEM art space in Enschede, ArTechLab’s students will present the projects they experimentally researched using the newest materials and techniques. Think innovative 3D-printing experiments, kinetic structures, sculptures built with laser cutters and new material research. Some pictures of their work can be found below, and of course a lot more will be there at the exhibition’s opening.
Always a good idea to keep an eye on the vanguard!
More info about the event and a list of participating students can be found here (NL).
