Announcing: Dr. Ann-Sophie Lehmann
Dr. Ann-Sophie Lehmann (1969, The Netherlands) is an associate professor at the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University. Next to Quayola as the ‘audiovisual auteur’ and Andreas Nicolas Fischer as the visual and generative artist, Lehmann will bring a more academic and in-depth contextualisation of our subject.
Her research focuses specifically on developing new insights in modern visual culture by revealing parallels between computer graphics and the pre-photographic painterly tradition, in materials and tools as well as in practices. She approaches the creation of these processes which create our post-modern visual language not just as objects, but as processes.
In her recently completed study ‘The Brush in the Computer. A critical history of computer graphics and the ‘painterly turn’ in visual culture’ (funded with a VENI-research grant by NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research)),
From the research’s website:
On the whole, this study aims at firmly positioning computer graphics at the crossroads of art history and visual studies, thereby providing the foundation for a first critical history of computer graphics. An interdisciplinary cooperation with computer science and the integration of the field of image-production into the academic discourse, will offer fresh impulses to both disciplines.
For those who are a bit intimidated by all the academic and art historic language, Lehmann has a lecture up on Youtube which introduces materiality as a concept in our daily lives, recommend easy watching if you have 20 minutes to spare:
For those of you who like to approach it academically, Lehmann has published a number of scientific articles related to the subjects of Coded Matter(s) #3: Transmaterials. We’ve listed a few below for further reading:
